Follow-up appointments: What to expect

What is a follow-up?

A follow-up appointment is a quick check-in with your Provider after you’ve started your treatment.

A follow-up is needed if there has been a gap of 30 days or more in your treatment, these appointments are required to maintain proper oversight and care.

It’s a chance to:

  • Talk about how you’re feeling on your medication

  • Go over any side effects or concerns

  • Adjust your dose or treatment if needed

  • Get answers to any questions you have

Think of it as making sure your plan is working the best it can for you.

Types of follow-ups

Async follow-up (no video call)

  • What it is: You complete a secure check-in in your portal—short questions about symptoms, side effects, meds, and goals.

  • How it works: Your provider reviews your update and sends back guidance (If needed), any dose changes, and renewal decisions in your portal.

Virtual follow-up (live video or phone)

  • What it is: A real-time visit with your provider over video or phone.

  • How it works: You schedule a time, join from a private, quiet place, and discuss symptoms, side effects, questions, and next steps together.

Availability varies by state

  • Your scheduling options in the portal reflect what's available where you live. If only one option is available, you'll be guided to that format automatically.

If needed, you can schedule your follow-up appointment by logging into your portal, selecting a convenient time, and confirming the booking online.

How to Reschedule or Cancel

If you need to adjust your appointment:

  1. Log in to your portal and navigate to your homepage or the Schedule tab

  2. Cancel your existing appointment

  3. Book a new appointment for the next available time using the standard scheduling process

Please reschedule as soon as possible to avoid any delays in your next shipment.

What happens after the follow-up appointment?

Once your follow-up is completed, your provider will review the session, approve next steps, and you order will be ready to be submitted to the pharmacy.

Your cadence is how often you’ll check in with your Provider and renew your prescription. Your provider sets this schedule based on your personal care plan and can adjust it as needed. Your cadence may vary from 1-6 months, Shed will send reminders when a follow up appointment is needed.

Examples:

  • 30-day cadence: You’ll have a quick check-in about every 30 days. Medications are typically supplied for 30 days, and you’ll renew monthly.

  • 90-day cadence: You’ll check in about every 90 days. You'll be eligible to refill your medication each month for 3 months before you need to renew..

If your plan changes, we’ll let you know your new cadence and next steps.

Why is it important?

Follow-up visits help keep your treatment safe, effective, and on track. By completing your follow-ups, you:

  • Stay safe: Your provider checks for side effects and drug interactions and makes sure your treatment is appropriate for you.

  • Get the best results: A licensed provider can adjust your dose or plan so your medication works as well as possible.

  • Avoid gaps in medication: Many prescriptions require a follow-up to renew—missing one can delay refills.

  • Track progress: A licensed provider review your goals, symptoms, and measurements (and labs if needed) to see what’s improving.

  • Ask questions: It’s your time to bring up concerns and get clear next steps.

  • Track progress — Your provider reviews your goals, symptoms, and measurements to see what's improving

If you miss a follow-up: your renewal may be delayed and we may not be able to continue your prescription until you’re seen.

Bottom line: follow-ups keep you safe, keep your medication coming on time, and help you get the best results.

What happens if I don't complete my follow-up?

Follow-ups are required to safely continue your prescription. If you miss yours:

  • We can’t renew or ship your next order.

  • Billing continues. Your subscription will still be charged on its regular schedule even if you don’t complete your follow-up, per your plan’s terms. Missing a visit does not cancel billing or create an automatic refund.

  • Refills may be delayed, which can cause a gap in treatment.
