Expectations and progress

Weight loss isn't linear, it's full of natural ups, downs, and pauses.

A healthy pace averages 0.5 to 1.5 pounds per week, but remember your journey is unique.

Plateaus are a common part of weight loss. They're a chance to pause, reflect, and adjust, not a sign of failure or that you're done with your progress.

What your weight changes can tell you, based on how often you weigh in

Daily (fluctuations)

Weekly (trends)

Monthly (full story)

What it shows

Temporary shifts in water, salt, and digestion

The direction your body is heading

Longer-term changes in body weight and overall trends

Why it happens

It’s normal for weight to fluctuate from day to day due to changes in hydration, sodium intake, digestion, hormones, and other factors.

Taking an average of seven days smooths out the daily noise

It looks past hormonal cycles, plateaus, and lifestyle changes

Weight loss expectation vs. reality

Expectation

  • Steady, linear decline

  • Loss every single day

  • Perfect adherence

Reality

  • Progress with ups and downs, with overall going down

  • Occasional plateaus

  • 80% focused, 20% flexible

Progress beyond the scale

Don't let the scale be your only measure of success. Non-scale victories (NSVs) matter just as much, often more:

  • Clothes fitting differently, losing inches

  • More energy throughout the day

  • Better sleep and mood

  • Experiencing less food noise and less cravings

  • Being able to stop when a craving hits and ask yourself if it's physical hunger

  • Improved digestion, feeling less bloated and being more regular

  • Improving biomarkers and lab values

  • Improved performance on exercise: walking more, lifting more, moving better, and feeling stronger

  • Confidence in making healthier choices

  • Stopping eating when feeling satisfied

  • Experiencing less inflammation

  • Exploring activities to manage stress and emotions

The scale shows one piece of the puzzle, but your NSVs tell the bigger story of lasting progress.

Reflect and reassess

Progress isn't just about moving forward, it's about pausing regularly to reflect on what's working, what's not, and what needs to shift.

Reflect and reassess to keep progressing with the scale and NSVs:

  • What's felt sustainable this week, and what's felt like a struggle?

  • Am I still eating in a way that fits my life, or has it started to feel restrictive or a free for all?

  • What patterns show up around my plateaus: stress, sleep, or schedule changes?

  • Which habits do I want to keep, adjust, or let go of?

  • Is my activity level still matching what my body needs right now?

  • Have my goals or priorities shifted since I started?

  • What kind of support would help me most right now?
